Janoris Jenkins had ankle surgery on Wednesday and was placed on injured reserve, making him the 20th Giants player this season to receive that designation.

The Pro Bowl cornerback aggravated a nagging ankle injury when he returned an interception for a touchdown in Thursday night’s loss to Washington. He returned to the game but allowed the go-ahead touchdown.

Jenkins missed the Sept. 18 game vs. Detroit with the ankle injury and the Nov. 5 games vs. the Rams because he was suspended by the team. Jenkins has a team-high three interceptions, including two returned for TDs (a 43-yarder at Denver and 53-yarder last week in Washington). Jenkins also had 31 tackles (27 solo), a team-high nine passes defensed, and forced a fumble.

The Giants signed former Lions DT Khyri Thornton to take his place on the 53-man roster.

Shepard returns

Sterling Shepard said the migraine that cost him two games felt like he was dealing with a hangover that lasted almost a full week.

“I’ve never really been through something like that,” the wide receiver said after his first full practice since the episode began. “The crazy thing was, it was lasting for so many days. I just didn’t know what was going on. I didn’t know if it was migraines or what, but I wasn’t feeling too good at all.”

He’s feeling better now and expects to return to the field on Sunday in Oakland.

Giant steps

DE Romeo Okwara (knee) practiced and the Giants designated him to return from injured reserve. He still needs to be added to the active roster by Saturday to play on Sunday, but Okwara said he feels 100 percent healthy and is ready to go . . . OL Justin Pugh (back) was hopeful he could play against Oakland but after working on the side, said that is “an outside shot” calling the Dec. 10 game against the Cowboys “more realistic” for his return . . . LB B.J. Goodson (ankle) was limited for the first time since his injury in Week 7 . . . DT Damon Harrison (elbow) did not practice.
