Will Hill has been suspended for the next four games for violating the NFL's policy on performance-enhancing substances. The first-year safety said he tested positive for Adderall, a prescription drug that two other Giants have been suspended for since the end of last season.

Hill's suspension creates room on the active roster for safety Tyler Sash, who just finished serving his four-game suspension for the same substance.

Hill said he had a doctor's prescription for Adderall before signing with the Giants on May 14. Shortly after, he was told of the league's list of banned substances in a meeting. "I knew at that point that this may be an issue," Hill said. "I was tested and the results came back that Adderall was in my system. I appealed but lost the appeal."

With Jayron Hosley sidelined by a hamstring injury, Hill has played nickel back for the Giants. He also contributed on special teams Sunday, forcing a fumble on a kickoff return and covering up an onside kick by the Browns. He'll be eligible to return after the team's Nov. 4 game against the Steelers.

Running back Andre Brown was the other Giant to test positive for Adderall, but he had his suspension overturned.

Giant steps

Hakeem Nicks has missed the last three games, but coach Tom Coughlin was not ready to say whether he will be able to practice or play this week. Results of an MRI on his swollen left knee were not released . . . Tight end Martellus Bennett suffered what he called a hyperextended left knee Sunday. He was to have further tests yesterday . . . Coughlin said wide receiver Ramses Barden has been cleared to return after being sidelined last week with a concussion . . . The NFL is reviewing an in-game tweet by Brown in which the running back, who had suffered a concussion, posted that he was OK. That violates the league's rules on the use of social media during a game and could result in a fine for Brown.
