A few more notes on Greg Jones, the sixth-round pick who was at the minicamp this week. He spent a lot of time with the veteran linebackers on the team, especially early in the week when Mathias Kiwanuka, Chase Blackburn and Michael Boley were around. But he really seemed to connect with Jonathan Goff.

You might not have expected that because eventually – maybe not this year but eventually – Jones will probably be competing with Goff for the starting middle linebacker job. You also might not have expected that because Goff has only been in the league three years and has only been a real contributor on defense for one season. He's still a youngster himself.

But the two even drove to practice together on Thursday and have spent time together going over things away from the hallowed turf of Bergen Catholic.

“Me and Jon are talking a lot, going over stuff,” Jones said. “He asked me if I wanted to come and look at some older stuff that he had with him. He just came over to my place where I’m staying and we watched a little bit of film and just talked and relaxed. I learned a lot from him. Very smart guy. (I’m) really appreciative of him extending a hand out and not being cocky at all, no ego whatsoever. He’s just been a great guy.”

Jones said he didn’t know what to expect from his first extended time with NFL teammates. He said he felt “humbled” and “honored” to be among them and working with them.

“It felt really good,” he said. “All this week I’ve been talking to our linebackers and it’s been good. All the guys have welcomed me in and been great people so I’m excited to be here.”

As for Goff already taking Jones under his wing, well, Jones wasn’t surprised by that.

“He’s the type of guy who wants to win,” Jones said. “When I was in college and I had a young guy come in, I wanted to win. You’re only as good as your weakest link so if I come in there and need to relieve him I need to be as good as he is and not miss a heartbeat.”
