John Harbaugh is adding another familiar veteran to his first Giants coaching staff.
Harbaugh will hire Greg Roman as a senior offensive assistant, a league source confirmed to Newsday. Roman was the Chargers' offensive coordinator under Harbaugh’s brother, Jim, the past two seasons until he was fired in January.
Roman also was the Ravens' offensive coordinator from 2019-22 and spent six seasons under John Harbaugh beginning in 2017. After the 2022 season ended with a Wild Card playoff loss, Roman resigned.
It’s one more experienced voice on the Giants’ offense. Harbaugh hired former Kansas City offensive coordinator Matt Nagy in the same capacity, and Willie Taggart is expected to coach running backs after following Harbaugh from the Ravens.
Roman is expected to assist with the run game, a strength of his while coaching in Baltimore. The Ravens led the NFL in rushing in 2019 and 2020, were third in 2021, and second in 2022.
He also helped Lamar Jackson win his first MVP award in 2019. Jackson, in his second season, led the NFL in touchdown passes and ran for 1,206 yards, a single-season record for quarterbacks.
The Chargers’ offense had different results. In 2024, they were 17th in rushing and 20th in offense. Last season, they were 12th in both categories.
As 49ers’ offensive coordinator from 2011-14, Roman also helped develop Colin Kaepernick’s best seasons. Kaepernick helped the 49ers reach the Super Bowl in 2013 and the NFC championship game in 2014.
Roman’s success with Jackson and Kaepernick makes him another strong voice for Jaxson Dart’s growth. Dart’s dual-threat ability last season made him a finalist for NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year.
Roman also will help a Giants rushing attack that finished fifth in that category last season behind Dart, Tyrone Tracy and Cam Skattebo.
