Is Matt Dodge safe?
Not a very handsome debut for punter Matt Dodge. Two line drive punts, one punt blocked for a safety, a net of 16.0 yards per kick. At least he kept his sense of humor.
"I like to look at the positives," he said. "We won and I caught every punt snap. That’s about all of the positives I can look at."
Keeping a sense of humor is one thing. Keeping a job in the NFL is another. And Dodge was quick to note that he knows he might not be around long if he keeps punting the way he did yesterday.
"It’s something I have to work on, get more and more comfortable, and hopefully still be around here to punt better," he said.
Dodge equated his line drives to a golfer trying to hit the ball too far off the first tee. Inevitably you overswing and the ball does not do what it should. His best kick of the day was a 65-yard free kick after teh safety, which was met with the first mock cheer in New Meadowlands Stadium history.
As for the block, Dodge said he didn't see the replay so he doesn't know where the breakdown was in the blocking. But he did know one thing that was wrong.
"I can go ahead and say I probably took too long to get it off."
