Joe Schoen’s partnership with Giants coach John Harbaugh has gone smoothly during the first four months. Now the general manager’s future is a bit more secure.

The Giants announced Thursday that they have agreed to a multiyear extension with Schoen, who was entering the final year of the contract he signed when he was hired in 2022.

On multiple occasions after the season and at the NFL Combine, he declined to discuss his future, but in January, he explained why he thought he deserved to retain his job.

“Early on, I made mistakes,” Schoen said then. “I’m fortunate to have great ownership here where you’re allowed to stub your toe and try to course-correct.”

His job status was questioned after the Giants went 22-45-1 the past four seasons. Since 2024, the Giants are 7-27, the most losses in a two-year span in franchise history.

Ownership publicly backed Schoen after the Giants went 3-14 in 2024 and again last season after firing coach Brian Daboll midway through a 4-13 season. He was tasked with leading the coaching search, and Harbaugh was hired in January.

Schoen’s tenure has been hit-or-miss with draft success. He drafted Malik Nabers, Jaxson Dart and Abdul Carter but also whiffed on Evan Neal in 2022. Kayvon Thibodeaux, his first 2022 pick, has started for four seasons but has struggled with injuries and production.

In April, Schoen added a draft class headlined by Arvell Reese and Francis Mauigoa. He also has earned praise from Harbaugh on their relationship.

“Joe and I have been working together every single day, I mean, hours on end,” Harbaugh said after the draft. “Whether it’s planning or organizing or just talking about players or watching tape again over and over again on these guys, I feel like it’s gone very well.”
