Jonathan Goff signs with the Redskins

When the Giants drafted Jonathan Goff and Bryan Kehl in the fourth and fifth rounds of the 2008 draft, they thought they could be drafting their linebackers of the future. Little did they know they were drafting the Redskins’ linebacker of the future.
Kehl, who played the last two seasons with the Rams, signed with the Redskins earlier this month and today Goff, who was a starter for the Giants in 2010 but missed all of 2011 with a torn ACL, joined him.
The Giants have plenty of alternatives at middle linebacker this season, including second-year players Greg Jones and Mark Herzlich, veteran Chase Blackburn, and even outside linebacker Michael Boley who has played the position in most of the Giants’ sub packages. With veteran Keith Rivers now on the Giants, that could free Boley up to move to the middle in a more permanent capacity.
As for the Redskins, who play a 3-4 scheme, they have already resigned veteran London Fletcher and are expecting Perry Riley to join him as their inside linebackers. Goff, 26, will likely compete with Riley for the job or be a backup for both of those players.
