Linval Joseph not playing, Phillips gets the start

Giants rookie Linval Joseph hopes to crack a crowded defensive line rotation this year. Credit: Patrick E. McCarthy
The Giants have announced their inactives for today's game, and there are a few surprises. I'll just start with the list:
Aaron Ross, Phillip Dillard, Gerris Wilkinson, Mitch Petrus, Dave Tollefson, Victor Cruz, Duke Calhoun and Linval Joseph.
So, two defensive linemen sitting out? I guess I can see Tollefson, since he is the fifth defensive end. But I was shocked that Joseph is not dressing, especially with the Panthers' unabashed desire to bash the ball. Then again, I wouldn't be surprised to see a lot of the "Big Base" scheme we saw in training camp with Tuck or Pierre-Paul playing some tackle and Kiwanuka at linebacker.
By the way, it's official: Kenny Phillips is starting in place of Deon Grant.
