If you had an extra quarter mil lying around and wanted to buy the Super Bowl XXV ring that once belonged to Lawrence Taylor, the bad news is that you’re too late.

The ring, which has been up for auction this week through Taylor’s son (known as T.J.), was sold overnight after an extended bidding period for $230,401. SCPAuctions.com, which sold the ring, did not disclose the purchaser. The $230,401, by the way, includes a buyers premium, whatever that is. So the bid may not have been $230,401 but that’s how much it will cost.

According to Darren Rovell of CNBC, it's the highest price ever paid for a Super Bowl ring. The estimated value of the ring according to auction literature was between $75,000 and $100,000.

Anyway, it’s pretty clear that whoever bought the ring isn’t named Osi Umenyiora. The Giants defensive end said on Twitter yesterday that he would purchase the ring and return it to LT if he reached a million followers. When that became totally unrealistic, Umenyiora dropped his goal to an also unrealistic 500,000.

By the way, a tip to all future follower-hoarders: If you’re trying to drive you your number of followers with a gimmick, do it during the week when people are at work and more apt to waste time on their computers and pass along funny things like this to co-workers. I don’t think Umenyiora would have hit 500,000 even with that advice, but he probably would have come closer. Osi wound up with almost 53,000 followers, which was about a 200 percent increase from where he was when he started his push.

“Good Morning people!,” Osi Tweeted this morning in what will have to serve at his concession speech. “Well i guess we didnt make it to 500k for LT. But i appreciate the people who tried. #respect# you can now unfollow me”

Given how entertaining and relevant and buzzworthy Umenyiora’s Twitter feed has been, I suggest you ignore that last piece of advice.
