The Super Bowl XXV ring that once belonged to Lawrence Taylor was sold at auction over the weekend for $230,401, the most ever paid for a Super Bowl ring. The item, which was sold by Taylor's son, TJ, went into extended bidding through SCPAuctions.com on Saturday night until the winning bid was reached Sunday morning.

The item far exceeded the estimated pre-auction value of between $75,000 and $100,000.

SCPAuctions.com did not announce who placed the winning bid, but it was clearly not Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora. Umenyiora posted on Twitter on Saturday morning that he would buy the ring and return it to Taylor if he reached 1 million followers on the social networking site. He lowered his goal to 500,000 later Saturday but ultimately only procured around a 10th of that number of followers.

Taylor had given the ring, which he won for leading the 1990 Giants to a Super Bowl win over the Bills, to his son years ago, a representative said last week. Taylor gave his son his blessing in the sale, but has apparently told him that the Super Bowl XXI ring, which TJ Taylor also owns, is "off limits" as far as being sold.
