Mathias Kiwanuka: Tom Coughlin more intense

Mathias Kiwanuka says the old Tom Coughlin has returned.

With the Giants set to begin the 2014 season, Kiwanuka said the coach has reverted to a more demanding demeanor.

"He's definitely more intense than I've seen him before," the defensive end said Monday. "He's back to the '07 Tom who was just 100-percent focused on details and not willing to let anything slide. He's taking everybody and holding them accountable."

Kiwanuka made it clear that Coughlin, who turned 68 Sunday, has never actually let things slide or allowed the players to get too comfortable. But after two years in which the Giants failed to reach the playoffs, it's clear that the cozy, cuddly Coughlin has had enough.

"You can see it in his eyes that he wants to win now," Kiwanuka said. "There's no waiting until next year, no waiting until whenever. It's about getting this group of guys right here to win now. He's trying to do it and I think that's going to bleed into the rest of the team."

Wynn win situation

Kerry Wynn waited for a call during the NFL draft, but it never came. That was disheartening. He waited for a call Saturday, too. That never came, either. It was exhilarating.

No phone ring meant no cut, and by the end of the day, Wynn was a full-fledged member of the Giants.

The rookie from Richmond had two sacks in the preseason games and impressed coaches with his athleticism and eagerness to learn. He and wide receiver Corey Washington were the only two undrafted rookies to make the 53-man roster.

"It's kind of surreal right now," Wynn said. "I'm just enjoying the moment, but at the same time, when I heard the news, it just made me hungrier, made me want to go back to work and get things going again."

Giant steps

Eli Manning noted the difference in practice Monday. "It's definitely a little different tempo, a little different mind-set," the quarterback said. "The regular season's coming, we've got a real-deal game coming around in a week, and so we've got to get physically and mentally prepared to be at our best." Still, the Giants didn't spend much time getting ready for the Lions. "We'll have [Tuesday] off and then start game-planning, watching some film and getting ready for Detroit," Manning said . . . G Brandon Mosley (back) did not practice Monday. Coughlin said Mosley might be back this week, but he also was impressed by the play of John Jerry in Mosley's position . . . Coughlin said he has not decided on a starting tight end, although Larry Donnell is listed at the top of the unofficial depth chart.
