Giants coach John Harbaugh has found his offensive coordinator after pivoting from Todd Monken being hired as the Browns head coach.
The Giants will hire Matt Nagy, a league source confirmed to Newsday. Nagy was Kansas City’s offensive coordinator the last three seasons after being hired in 2022 as quarterbacks coach.
Nagy also was 34-31 as Bears head coach from 2018-21. The Bears went 12-4 his first season and Nagy was named AP NFL Coach of the Year. He made the playoffs twice before being fired after going 6-11 in his final season.
Both Harbaugh and Nagy worked under Kansas City coach Andy Reid. Harbaugh’s last season as Eagles defensive backs coach under Reid was in 2007, a year before Nagy was hired as an Eagles coaching intern during the offseason.
At his introductory news conference, Harbaugh said that he hoped his second coaching job had similar success to Reid’s second act winning multiple Super Bowls.
“We’ll sign up for that deal right now, what he did in Kansas City,” Harbaugh said. “Let’s do that.”
Now he’ll start that goal with Reid’s former coordinator. Nagy’s first stint with Kansas City started in 2013 as the quarterbacks coach for three seasons. He was promoted to offensive coordinator from 2016-17.
As a quarterback, Nagy played with the Arena Football League’s New York Dragons in 2002 at Nassau Coliseum. He threw for 27 touchdowns and five interceptions in seven games but suffered an ACL injury during the offseason that led to him being traded in November 2003.
Monken was expected to follow Harbaugh after being the Ravens' offensive coordinator the last three seasons. However, Monken was hired by the Browns on Jan. 28, his first NFL head coaching gig.
The Giants moved on and interviewed several candidates, including Broncos pass game coordinator Davis Webb and Colts offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter.
With Nagy’s hire, quarterback Jaxson Dart gets to continue developing under a coordinator who has worked with Patrick Mahomes. Last season as a rookie, Dart worked with offensive coordinator Mike Kafka, who also served on Reid’s staff.
Nagy did not call plays during his second stint as Kansas City offensive coordinator. His contract expired after this season and he interviewed with several teams for their head coaching jobs, including the Jets and Ravens.
“He deserves to have a head coaching job,” Reid told reporters on Jan. 26. “If not, it gives him an opportunity to go out and do his thing. I mean, somebody is missing a gem here. That's how I feel. I would love to see him get picked up and going.”
Nagy joins an offense that ranked fifth in rushing last season. Receiver Malik Nabers will also return after a season-ending ACL injury in his right knee.
