Here's a little good news for Giants fans to fight the gloomy weather that we just noted:

Osi Umenyiora has been named the NFC Defensive Player of the Month for October. It's the first time in nine years that a Giants player has received the honor. Michael Strahan did it in October of 2001 when he was on his way to setting the single-season sack record with 22.5.

(Eli Manning also won NFC Offensive Player of the Month in November 2008.)

Umenyiora, who has been battling knee and hip injuries all season, played in four games in Cotober. He had 18 tackles, 7 sacks, and 6 forced fumbles.

Here's an interesting note: Umenyiora had 3 sacks against the Bears, 2 against the Texans and 2 against the Lions. Prior to that stretch, he had never had multiple sacks in back-to-back games. The streak ended at three games, though, as he didn't have a sack against the Cowboys.
