Neil Best, who would have been @newsdaygiants long before I was had there been Twitter when he was covering the beat, made the trip out to Seattle this weekend for the game. Besides doing a bang-up job on a column and sidebar and offering strong company on the road, he also made reference late in the game to Joe Montgomery. This was while D.J. Ware was running for first downs and milking the clock of its final ticks.

He and some other veterans on the beat nodded knowingly at the reference. I and some other relative new-comers did not. So Neil took the time to send me and a few others an email breaking down the comparisons between the D.J. Ware drive and the Joe Montgomery drive.

Here is what Neil's research wrought:

Nov. 7, 2010: Drive began with 13:34 left and Giants at their 20-yard line, leading 41-7, with backup quarterback Sage Rosenfels under center.

Ware for 6 yards. Ware for 7. Ware for 5. Ware for 8. (False start on Snee.) Ware for 9. Ware for 4. Ware for 2. Jacobs for 7. Ware for 4. Ware for 6. Ware for 5. Ware for 0. Jacobs for 3. Jacobs for 3. Ware for 5. Ware for 5. Two-minute warning. Rosenfels kneel down. Rosenfels kneel down. Rosenfels kneel down.

Summary: 19 plays, 71 net yards, six first downs, 13:00 possession time.

Jan. 14, 2001: Drive began with 12:53 left and Giants at their 20-yard line, leading 41-0, with backup quarterback Jason Garrett under center.

Montgomery for 3. Montgomery for 6. Montgomery for 1. Montgomery for 3. Montgomery for 3. Montgomery for 7. Montgomery for 8. Montgomery for minus-1. Garrett to Hilliard for 4. Montgomery for minus-1. Montgomery for 2. Garrett sacked for minus-5. Face mask penalty on Vikings. Montgomery for 6. Montgomery for 0. Montgomery for 2. Montgomery for 3. Two-minute warning. Garrett kneel down. Garrett kneel down. Garrett kneel down.

Summary: 19 plays, 53 net yards, five first downs, 12:53 possession time.

Neil also points out that Garrett, the backup quarterback for the Giants on that play, now gets to make his NFL debut as a head coach against the Giants.

Thanks Niel!
