No long-term contract for Jason Pierre-Paul before deadline

It's been a month full of unexpected bad news for the Giants' Jason Pierre-Paul, but this, at least, everyone saw coming. As expected, the injured defensive end did not sign a long-term contract with the team before the 4 p.m. deadline, the Giants confirmed Wednesday.
Pierre-Paul reportedly was released Tuesday from Miami's Jackson Memorial Hospital after suffering serious hand injuries in a July 4 fireworks accident. He is a franchise-tendered player and had until Wednesday to negotiate a deal longer than the one-year contract that's on the table.
Multiple reports have indicated that Pierre-Paul had his right index finger amputated and had surgery to help repair a fracture in his thumb. Although his franchise tag also came with a one-year, $14.8-million offer, it is unknown when Pierre-Paul will be healthy enough to return, and he has yet to sign that contract.
The Giants have the option to remove the franchise tag but have not done so, even though Pierre-Paul did not meet with team personnel who traveled to Florida to assess his injury last week. If he signs the franchise deal while he still is unable to play, the Giants can place him on the non-football injury list, but he'll lose a portion of his contract money.
Giants sign safety
The Giants signed safety Jeromy Miles, who played with the Ravens last season. Miles (6-2, 211 pounds) spent two seasons in Baltimore under Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo and is entering his sixth season. Last year, Miles, who turns 28 next week, made 10 tackles, mostly on special teams . . . The Giants also waived wide receiver Marcus Harris and safety Justin Currie.
