The Giants received the good news they were hoping for on Tuesday when an evaluation of Geoff Schwartz's dislocated right big toe determined that no surgery is required. The veteran guard is expected to return at some point in the first half of the regular season.

"He is very optimistic, and hopefully it is going to mean the recovery is going to be as fast as possible," Tom Coughlin said of his conversation with Schwartz. "Obviously you can't rush him back but it sure would be good to get him back ASAP rather than the other way around."

Schwartz will wear a protective boot for 7-10 days and then be re-evaluated on a week-to-week basis, a course set after visiting foot specialist Dr. Robert Anderson in Charlotte on Monday. "This is just a minor setback," Schwartz said through the team's website.

"I plan on attacking the rehab program so I can get back on the field as soon as possible with my teammates and help us win games."

Brown in, McManus out

The Giants traded K Brandon McManus to the Broncos for a conditional draft pick on Tuesday, just hours after deciding they would keep veteran Josh Brown over the impressive rookie. The team already had announced its intention to waive McManus, but the Broncos, in need of a kicker with Matt Prater facing a four-game suspension, facilitated the deal before McManus officially was cut.

"Obviously I'm very pleased with the decision and my family is pleased with the decision," Brown said of winning the competition. "It's our goal to make sure the Giants are pleased with their decision."

Giant steps

To get to the 75-man roster the Giants placed S Cooper Taylor (toe) and WR Marcus Harris (hip) on injured reserve and waived CBs Charles James II and Ross Weaver, S C.J. Barnett and S Kyle Sebetic, LB Spencer Adkins, WR Travis Harvey, TEs Xavier Grimble and Jerome Cunningham, G John Sullen, and DT Everett Dawkins. LB Justin Anderson (hamstring) and DE Emmanuel Dieke (knee) were waived/injured.
