Osi: Giants' contract offers not acceptable

The Osi Umenyiora situation is beginning to get downright Shockeyish. And, as Umenyiora sees it, it is getting worse.
After general manager Jerry Reese said the defensive end was offered a contract extension in each of the past two years and turned the Giants down, Umenyiora responded in emails to various media outlets, including Newsday, that the offers were unacceptable and he was unhappy with being portrayed as a "greedy pig."
The last time a player had this kind of offseason battle with the front office was in 2008, when tight end Jeremy Shockey forced his way off the team in a trade to the Saints.
On Saturday, Reese said the Giants hope to have Umenyiora back for the 2012 season and beyond -- "Our first choice with respect to Osi is that he will play for the Giants and retire as a Giant," he said -- and noted the previous offers. "Osi has been offered an extension two years in a row now," Reese said.
Umenyiora wrote in his email that the offer last year was incentive-based and not a true extension and that this year's offer was "guaranteeing half of what they just gave Kiwi guaranteed," a reference to the three-year extension to Mathias Kiwanuka that included nearly $11 million guaranteed. "And I'm a greedy pig for turning down half of what they just gave Kiwi. Lol."
Clearly, though, the situation is tense and not a laughing matter, out loud or otherwise.
"What's been reported is the offer and although it's a lot of money, it's obvious why I can't accept that," Umenyiora wrote. "I will no longer be talking about it, though. As you can see, things are only getting worse."
Goff signs with Redskins. Jonathan Goff, the Giants' starting middle linebacker in 2010 and the projected starter in 2011 until he tore his ACL, has signed with the Redskins as a free agent.
Goff, 26, will compete with London Fletcher and Perry Riley in the middle of the Redskins' 3-4 scheme. The Giants chose to explore other options for middle linebacker in 2012, including bringing back veteran Chase Blackburn, giving opportunities to second-year players Greg Jones and Mark Herzlich, and possibly shifting outside linebacker Michael Boley inside.
Goff was a fifth-round pick by the Giants in 2008. Another linebacker the Giants selected in that draft, Bryan Kehl, also recently signed with the Redskins.
