Plaxico Burress will spend another football season behind bars.

The former Giants receiver who was sentenced to two years in prison last September had a request for work release denied by the state's Department of Correctional Services Tuesday. It was his second request for a work furlough and he cannot reapply for one until June 2011.

Burress, 33, pleaded guilty last year to attempted criminal possession of a weapon after he accidentally shot himself in the leg in December 2008. "The serious and negative impact illegal guns have on the community coupled with [the] dangerous nature of the weapon discharging in a public place renders him unsuitable for work release," the DCS said.

A work furlough would have allowed Burress to spend some of his remaining sentence free and working at a job, but a resumption of his NFL career while in the program would have been unlikely. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has ruled that Burress would be reinstated and eligible to sign with a team upon the completion of his sentence.

Although Giants general manager Jerry Reese said that the team would investigate the possibility of Burress returning to the team, that remains a long shot at best. The Giants released Burress in April 2009.
