Lots to cover today. Luckily there wasn’t much to today’s practice, which even ended about 20 minutes shy of the usual two hours. The team was mostly working off of cards to get ready for the Panthers preseason opener on Saturday and at one point was working on goal line situations in shells. There’s really nothing less informative to be watching than the most physically-demanding aspect of a game boiled down to 22 guys bumping into each other like rubber duckies floating in a tub.
And we didn’t even have an Osi watch!
The Giants had 10 guys not practicing, including Umenyiora who is in Atlanta for his second opinion. Clint Sintim missed a second straight day of practice and Domenik Hixon seems to be sticking to his every-other-day schedule. The other guys not working were Brain Jackson, Jim Cordle, Sam Giguerre, Joe Burnett and Travis Beckum. Oh, and the two PUPpies as well, Barden and Koets.
It looked like when the Giants were in a three-receiver set they had Manningham in the slot with Hakeem Nicks and Victor Cruz on the outside. Manningham was working quite a bit inside, as he has been throughout camp. It was just magnified today I’m sure because of the Steve Smith news. And on one play it looked like Manning and Manningham have a ways to go on their communication because the quarterback had to double-clutch a pass for him in the seam and wound up throwing it awkwardly and short.
I’ll keep the highlights short from the first series of 11-on-11s, which as I said were mostly scout teams running Panthers plays on either side of the ball. But there were a few plays to note, such as David Carr’s deep pass for Devin Thomas down the right sideline that was a bit underthrown with Aaron Ross in coverage and Ross’ interception a few plays later on a deep ball from Carr to Jernigan (who again was wearing Steve Smith’s old No. 12). Woodny Turenne did a nice job breaking up a deep pass from Perrilloux to Todd Watkins.
In 7-on-7s Michael Coe and Darius Reynaud collided and knocked each other to the ground going for a deep ball down the left sideline … Michael Clayton made a good catch on a low pass from Rosenfels, rolling near the right sideline … Perrilloux threw an incompletion deep intended for Jernigan and then nearly had a pass intercepted by both Cary Harris and Brian Witherspoon.
In the rest of the 11-on-11s, Victor Cruz caught a pass from Manning but Kenny Phillips came up and poked it away from him … Jacquian Williams, who has had a quiet camp, has come on in recent practices and broke up a pass intended for Clayton … Phillip Dillard was in position to make a stop as Andre Brown took a run and broke it out to the left … Cruz let a pass from Perrilloux go through his hands … Jernigan looked a little Smithish catching a pass in the seam.
In red zone, Brandon Jacobs gave fans a little scare when he fell in the end zone and started pounding the ground as if in pain. Ronnie Barnes came running over but Jacobs was quickly up and gave the team a thumbs up. He was back in a few plays later and caught a play-action pass from Manning for a touchdown … Manningham caught a fade from Rosenfels from the slot in the back of the end zone over his shoulder … Jernigan made a catch on a crossing route at the goal line from Perrilloux and rolled into the end zone … Turenne broke up another pass, this time from Perrilloux to Duke Calhoun.
And that was about it.
