Sorgi says he'll definitely practice on Monday
Jim Sorgi might not be ready to practice on Monday, but plans on doing so anyway.
The backup quarterback who came out of the preseason game against the Jets with a torn anterior capsule in his throwing shoulder said Wednesday he believes he has to give the Giants "more to look at to help them make their decision" about who will be Eli Manning's primary backup.
"In my mind, I feel like I have to play next week," he said.
Sorgi's initial diagnosis was to miss 3-4 weeks he said, but he could return after two. It will be two weeks on Monday, when Sorgi plans on practicing. "Another week would be terrible," he said.
The Giants have kept just two quarterbacks on the 53-man roster the past two years. Sorgi and Rhett Bomar have been competing for that spot. Now Bomar is the only one able to practice, so he has the leg up. Sorgi knows his future with the Giants could depend on how his shoulder responds in the next few days.
Barden being patient
Tom Coughlin said that the only thing holding back Ramses Barden and the fractured transverse process in his back was his ability to play through the pain. Barden called that "only semi-true" Wednesday.
"As long as it hurts, and there's pain, it's still protecting the bone," Barden said. "When the pain lessens, the bone is strong enough to handle it on its own. That means there can't be any further breakage or damage.Right now, we might be in that stage where it could get worse, so we're taking the proper precautions," Barden said. Still, he said he is "an optimist" about returning to the field net week.
Giant steps
Coughlin said CB Aaron Ross has a partial tear of his plantar fascia and will be in a cast for about 10 days . . . CB Terrell Thomas did not practice while resting a sore calf but said he expects to play Saturday against the Ravens . . . RB D.J. Ware said the concussion he suffered on Saturday was milder than the one he took last year against the Broncos. "The one from last year probably was an 8, this one was a 2," he said. He also said he hopes to be back next week S Kenny Phillips had two interceptions in practice, his first two since returning.
