Sweed, Hill hoping to make most of second chances
Tom Coughlin said you can only make one first impression. A few players here at the Giants’ rookie minicamp hope he’s wrong.
One of them is Limas Sweed, who was a second-round pick of the Steelers in 2008 whose career was marred by dropped passes and injuries. He’s here as a veteran tryout hoping to catch on with a team and the Giants are the latest stop on his hopeful return path to the NFL.
“I’m a firm believer in putting in the hard work and seeing where things take me,” Sweed said. “Right now I’m not worrying about the numbers, not worrying about anything, just taking it day by day and putting the work in.”
Sweed had an Achilles injury and a shoulder injury that derailed his career. But he did win a Super Bowl with the Steelers and said he sees a lot of similarities between that franchise and this one. He’s also spoken with Aaron Ross, another Texas product, about the atmosphere with the Giants. “They told me it was a great place, good people, obviously a winner’s mentality,” Sweed said.
Another player hoping to make the most of a second chance is safety Will Hill who was overlooked in the draft last year. Hill had several run-ins during his time at the University of Florida that red-flagged him for many teams and may best be known for a series of Tweets that made reference to marijuana use and prostitution. He played in the arena league last season.
