Tom Coughlin doesn't mind Martellus Bennett being a sideshow

ALBANY -- Martellus Bennett has developed quite a reputation for his eccentric personality and colorful analogies in this training camp, from calling himself a "black unicorn" on the field to comparing Eli Manning's decision-making in the pocket to his wife trying to figure out where to go for dinner.

That doesn't seem to be the Tom Coughlin mold, but , he said he's fine with all of the sideshow stuff as long as Bennett produces on the field.

"I like them to have their own personalities," Coughlin said. "I just like them to be able to structure within the concept of trying to keep the focus on the game, on the field and on the team. I don't like robots. I like to kid around with them every once in a while. I also like them to realize when it's acceptable and when it isn't acceptable."

Asked about the perception that Coughlin, earlier in his Giants tenure, preferred to have "robots," the coach began walking around in a mechanical manner with stiff arms and joints. "It was a lot easier to get along with them, I'll tell you that," he said of his collection of cyborgs. "I've become more patient."

Hendricks catches eyesIt's always noteworthy when a young player receives unsolicited praise from Coughlin, so when he spoke about second-year defensive tackle Dwayne Hendricks Sunday, it was worth listening. "I've told anybody that goes against Dwayne Hendricks, he's going full speed every play," Coughlin said. "If you're foolish enough to think that he's not going to make you look bad, you're ridiculous. So he goes out and plays the game just like he practices. He did very well for himself."

Giant steps Antrel Rolle was asked if he ever played against Tim Tebow, as he could when the Giants face the Jets Saturday. "Uh, no," he said. He was asked if he is curious to see what Tebow can do in a game. Rolle's answer: "Uh, no."
