Tom Coughlin has no issues with offense

A week and a half into training camp, a day before the first of August, and three days away from the preseason opener, Tom Coughlin seemed satisfied with the new offense.

"I think we have thrown a lot at them,'' he said Thursday. "We are probably not quite halfway through all of the installations. There is a lot spinning and we have to find out what our people can do and gauge what we are doing according to our personnel. I don't have any issues right now.''

Eli Manning had an up-and-down practice. He underthrew Jerrel Jernigan on a deep pass down the right sideline that was broken up by Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and ended the workout with an interception that Jacquian Williams batted into the arms of Jameel McClain. He also connected with Rueben Randle for two touchdowns.

That wasn't the part of the offense Coughlin had his eye on, though. He was more excited about the big holes being opened by the offensive line.

"The progress is being made and I thought we were a little sharper today in the nine-on-seven [running drills],'' he said. "If we can just keep getting better in that area, so we can run it.''

Nassib gets his shot

The expectations are higher for Ryan Nassib this summer. So are the stakes. The fourth-round draft pick a year ago is fighting for the job as Manning's backup and heading into his first extensive opportunity to play in the NFL this preseason.

"Last year, he was trying to find the door to the field,'' Coughlin said. "The experience factor's got to come for Ryan right here in these preseason games.''

Nassib was 7-for-9 for 114 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions last preseason. Starting with Sunday's Hall of Fame Game, he should see more action as he battles Curtis Painter for the backup job and most likely a roster spot.

"We're gunning for the same job,'' Nassib said. "You're going to have multiple quarterbacks in camp. The ones who execute and make good decisions tend to be the ones who stick around.''

Nassib will get to show he can do that beginning Sunday. Coughlin said Nassib has been "very steady'' in training camp, but now comes the real audition.

Said Coughlin: "I expect to see him have plenty of playing time, take full advantage of it and prove to the world what he can do.''

Giant steps

The Giants had a handful of injuries to deal with yesterdayon Thursday. Starting DT Mike Patterson (shoulder) sat out practice and starting LT Will Beatty (illness) left the field early. Rookie CB Bennett Jackson was taken for X-rays of his ankle after he became tangled with WR Corey Washington in a one-on-one drill. Washington also hurt his heel on the play. DE Robert Ayers Jr. (ankle) had to be helped off the field. WR Odell Beckham Jr. (hamstring), G John Jerry (knee), WR Trindon Holliday (hamstring) and LB Spencer Paysinger (concussion) sat out the entire practice.
