The Giants are celebrating "Salute to Service" day on Sunday. Sometimes, though, service salutes back.

That's the case for Tom Coughlin, who has been nominated for the fourth annual Salute to Service Award presented by USAA, the NFL's official Military Appreciation sponsor.

Ravens coach John Harbaugh won the award last year and USAA contributed $25,000 in his honor to the official aid societies representing all five military branches.

Harbaugh won for inviting wounded warriors as his guests to every Ravens home game and helping institute Military Appreciation Day, an annual event that takes place during Baltimore's training camp. He was presented the Outstanding Civilian Service Award by Army Chief of Staff Gen. Raymond Odierno (who is a huge Giants fan and close friend of Coughlin's).

All 32 teams nominated players, coaches, personnel and alumni who demonstrate an exemplary commitment to honoring and supporting the military community.

The Jets, for example, nominated owner Woody Johnson. The Eagles and the Cowboys nominated their cheerleaders. Amityville's Darryl Young, a fullback for Washington, was nominated by his team. Defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, a one-time assistant coach at Hofstra, was Seattle's nominee.

Finalists for the Salute to Service Award will be announced in January, and the winner will be recognized at the annual "NFL Honors" awards show that will be broadcast on NBC on Saturday, Jan. 31, the night before Super Bowl XLIX, from Arizona.

In addition to honoring the military on Sunday, the Giants will host their 18th annual food drive. Fans are encouraged to bring canned or non-perishable foods and deposit them at any of the Stop & Shop bins at each stadium entrance.

Donations also can be made to the team's Virtual Food Drive by visiting All food collected during the drive will be donated to the Community FoodBank of New Jersey (a member of Feeding America) for distribution to local partner charities in the area.
