Tuck's sore Achilles a scary thing

There are some injuries in training camp that are easy to overlook. A tight hamstring for a defensive back, an aching shoulder on a linebacker. And then there are ones like this that could wind up having a tremendous impact on the upcoming season:
Justin Tuck had to take himself out of practice Wednesday with a sore Achilles.
There are a lot of red lights in that sentence. And while the injury does not appear to be too serious -- Tuck remained on the field in his pads and stood by watching practice -- the prospect of losing Tuck or having him nurse an injury through the season should send shivers through most Giants fans.
Lloyd: Tynes is the man
Rhys Lloyd, the Giants' recently-signed kicker, was very deferential to Lawrence Tynes in his first media session. "As far as I know Lawrence is here, he's the guy here, and we'll just take it one week at a time," he said. Of course John Carney said those exact same words all the way to Hawaii and the Pro Bowl in 2009.
Tynes injured his thigh when a field-goal attempt was blocked in Saturday's preseason game against the Panthers. Rhys, a kickoff specialist who never has attempted a regular-season field goal, was signed on Tuesday.
Giant steps
Besides Tuck, two other defensive starters did not practice: LB Michael Boley (back) and DE Jason Pierre-Paul (back) . . . Backup QB Sage Rosenfels has been hospitalized with strep throat . . . In an interview on ESPN Radio, Giants owner John Mara said the team had an agreement in place with tight end Kevin Boss and he was flying back to New York to sign the deal when "he hit the lottery" with a four-year, $16 million offer from the Raiders.
