Victor Cruz takes hit and makes play for Giants

It looked as if Victor Cruz was a little woozy after he was drilled up high by Jets safety LaRon Landry in the first quarter of Saturday night's preseason game. Turns out he was just waiting for his turn to dance.

Cruz said Landry had been yapping at him throughout the early stages of the game, especially after his hit on Cruz, who was going over the middle of the field. But it was Cruz, who caught and held on to the 21-yard pass, who had the last word on the matter.

"I was just kind of waiting for him to get off me," Cruz said. "He was on top of me being demonstrative with his own celebration. I just wanted to wait for him to get off and then I did my little thing."

He came off the turf, remained low to the ground, and signaled for an emphatic first down. Cruz, who had voiced concern earlier this week that replacement officials might not protect players properly, said Landry's hit was clean. "He hit me right in the chest," Cruz said. "It was a legal hit . . . He hit me right in the chest and it was a good shot."

It helped that Cruz knew the big hit was coming. "He was kind of telling me the whole game he wanted to lay one on me, so once they called that route, I was trying to stay away from him as much as possible," Cruz said. "He got a pretty good lick on me and I had to get up with a little bit of swagger and not let him do me like that."

Hosley has boot after pic

Jayron Hosley scored the only Giants touchdown of the first half when he stepped in front of Patrick Turner and picked off a third-and-10 pass from Mark Sanchez. Hosley then sprinted 77 yards down the sideline to give the Giants a 13-0 lead with 2:03 left in the second quarter. "All I seen was the end zone and I was going to get there," Hosley said. "That's what I did."

After the game, though, Hosley was wearing a protective boot on his right foot.

"I felt a little something in it and we went to the trainer and we have to get some more tests on it," he said.

Giant steps

Rutgers product Joe Martinek scored the Giants' only offensive touchdown, taking a pass from Ryan Perrilloux and diving into the end zone. "I probably thought about that situation a million times for years," Martinek said. "It was a great experience just to get in, and it felt really good" . . . LB Mark Herzlich (right hip pointer) and DE Adrian Tracy (right hamstring) both left with injuries in the first series of the third quarter. They'll have further tests Sunday.
