Witherspoon says he tore ACL, too

The Giants lost one of their most important defensive backs in last night’s game when Terrell Thomas tore his ACL. Today they learned that they have also lost their most promising one. Brian Witherspoon, who had made a big splash in training camp and was starting to find a niche on special teams, announced on Twitter that he tore his ACL as well.
Last night after the game Witherspoon was working on the assumption that he had a sprained MCL. But tests today apparently showed that the ACL tore.
Witherspoon was upset as he sat at his locker last night – a locker that was right next to Terrell Thomas’ – and mulled his uncertain future.
“I’m kind of beating myself up right now,” he said. “I’ve been doing so well in training camp and for me to get an injury at this point in time when I had such a good opportunity to make this team, it’s disappointing.”
Witherspoon said he was returning a punt when his foot just stuck in the FieldTurf. He was carted off the field.
Witherspoon is a third-year pro out of Stillman who has played with the Jaguars and Lions and appeared in the final regular season game of the 2010 season for the Giants.
