Aaron Glenn spent time evaluating himself and concluded that he needs to be much better .
“There's mistakes that I made that I won't replicate going into this season,” Glenn said at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis.
The Jets need a lot of things to be much better in 2026 for Glenn to keep his job as head coach after going 3-14 in his first season at the helm.
Here are five things that stood out from Glenn and general manager Darren Mougey meeting with the media on Tuesday.
1. Breece Hall would be tagged.
If the Jets can’t work out a deal with their 1,000-yard rusher, they will place the franchise tag or transition tag on Hall by the March 3 deadline.
“The tags are an option,” Mougey said. “Ideally, we'd find a way to get a deal done and keep Breece around. … We've been going through that process and are still doing so. We have a week to find out if we can't get to an agreement which way we'll go with that tag.”
The franchise tag (roughly $14.5 million) guarantees the Jets draft compensation if they don’t match another team’s offer for Hall. The transition tag ($11.7 million) would give the Jets seven days to match an offer for Hall. If they don’t, they won’t receive compensation.
“We'll find a way to keep Breece here if we can't get a deal done,” Mougey said.
2. Glenn defends owner Woody Johnson.
Glenn confirmed that he will call the defense and said that Johnson didn’t force him to do that.
“There’s a narrative about Woody that really needs to change,” Glenn said.
There were reports that when Glenn met with Johnson in Florida last month, the owner said he wouldn’t pay the salaries for new offensive and defensive play-callers and made Glenn run the defense.
According to Glenn, he spoke to Johnson about his vision for the coaching staff and team and Johnson said, “What can I do to help you? What can I do to help you be successful?”
“I feel fortunate to be in a position to have an owner that operates that way,” Glenn said. “I would really like that narrative to change that he's trying to force me and 'Mouge' to do certain things. … He is not pushing me to pick coaches. He is not pushing me to operate this team a certain way. The only thing he's doing is supporting it.”
As for being a play caller, Glenn described it as “my superpower” and believes handling those duties will be “a huge part of helping us become the team that I see us becoming.”
3. Glenn almost hired Wink Martindale.
Glenn admitted he was close to naming Wink Martindale as defensive coordinator. Glenn said while interviewing coaches, he decided to call the defense. He told Martindale and “[Martindale] was still a go.” Glenn changed course and turned to Brian Duker, who worked with him in Detroit.
“He’s been through the fire with me,” Glenn said. “He knows exactly how I want to operate. I think there's nothing more valuable than having that type of relationship with somebody.”
4. Justin Fields is still a Jet – for now.
The Jets are expected to move on from Fields, who has a $10 million guarantee this season. Mougey said there is “no trigger day with Justin's contract. So he's part of the Jets.”
Mougey added that they’re evaluating the quarterback position and that he, Glenn, new offensive coordinator Frank Reich and quarterbacks coach Bill Musgrave are constantly discussing “all the different options and all the opportunities we may or may not have.”
“For the time being, Justin is in all of those conversations,” Mougey said. “So we'll see where that goes as we go through the process.”
5. Moving up to No. 1 unlikely.
The Jets’ QB concerns could be answered if they had the No 1 pick and drafted Fernando Mendoza. The Raiders own that choice. The Jets pick second. Mougey used to work with Raiders GM John Spytek in Denver and doubts he will trade the first pick to the Jets.
“I talk to Spytek and those guys often as I do with other teams, talking about moving up, moving back,” Mougey said. “We'll talk about all those things. But I don't think that's happening.”
