Adam Gase’s first move as Jets coach could be a big one. NFL Network reported that he is “on the verge” of hiring Gregg Williams to be his defensive coordinator.

Gase officially was named the Jets’ coach Friday afternoon, but he reportedly began working on his staff before then. NFL Network reported that talks with Williams are “progressing” and “those involved believe it will get done.”

This could be a major hire for the Jets and Gase, who is an offensive-minded coach.

Williams is known as an aggressive defensive play-caller who likes to keep quarterbacks and offenses off-balance with his exotic blitz packages.

Williams has overseen seven top-10 defenses in his career and was defensive coordinator when the Saints won the Super Bowl in February 2010.

He later was suspended by the NFL for orchestrating a bounty program during his three years with the Saints in which players received cash for knocking opposing players out of games.

Williams has been a defensive coordinator for six teams: the Titans, Redskins, Saints, Jaguars, Rams and, most recently, the Browns.

He began the 2018 season as Cleveland’s defensive coordinator, ended it as the interim head coach and went 5-3 after taking over for Hue Jackson. The Browns fired Williams earlier this week after naming offensive coordinator Freddie Kitchens their head coach.

Gase reportedly also considered former Broncos coach Vance Joseph to be his defensive coordinator.

They worked together in Miami. But the Cardinals hired Joseph as their defensive coordinator Friday.
