With the lockout finally lifted, agent Joel Segal can get down to business -- as in the business of finding Jets free-agent wide receiver Santonio Holmes an employer.
"We're looking forward to getting Santonio a deal, hopefully with the Jets," Segal told 1050 ESPN Radio's "The Michael Kay Show'' Monday, "and take it from there."
However, there won't be an exclusive window in which the Jets are assured of getting the first crack at retaining Holmes. All 32 teams will be permitted to discuss contracts and terms with any free agent -- their own and those on other teams -- at 10 a.m. Tuesday. But no contracts can be signed before 6 p.m. Friday, when full free agency starts.
So even when the Jets open their Florham Park, N.J., training facility Tuesday morningfor conditioning, training and some classroom work, Holmes won't be there because he's not under contract. He's waiting to see how his first chance to shop his talents around the league shakes out.
"Santonio and I, over this long offseason, we've taken time," Segal said. "We've gone over each scenario. He's a huge fan of Rex Ryan, he's a huge fan of New York. And hopefully, we can work something out here. But we'll see what the market does."
Asked if Holmes might make financial sacrifices to remain a Jet, Segal said: "Let's see what happens the next couple of days. It's up to Santonio. He's the boss and we'll let him dictate."
Segal also represents another wide receiver who has been linked to the Jets: Randy Moss.
The ultra-talented Moss has been known to take a few plays off, and at 34, he is on the downside of a brilliant career. He played for three teams last season, finishing with the Titans after being shipped from the Patriots to the Vikings in October. He made only 28 catches for 393 yards and five touchdowns. But Segal thinks Moss is primed for a big rebound.
"He's a focused guy, he's such a prideful guy,'' Segal said. "Last time he had an off year with Oakland, he came back with huge years for New England. Randy has got that same chip on his shoulder. I expect a good market for Randy and I'm excited to go get him a huge deal.''
But after not being able to talk up clients to general managers, how can he be so sure?
"What we do is research," Segal said. "I've got depth charts, we've got trends. Maybe there are certain coaches who historically like the player, and they may be with some club. And if you have an opportunity in free agency to talk to those clubs, we're prepared to do those things."
Notes & quotes: A Cleveland municipal court spokesman told The Associated Press Monday that free-agent WR Braylon Edwards faces an Aug. 8 hearing in Cleveland to find out whether he violated his probation after pleading guilty to DUI Friday . . . All Jets business-side employees forced to take unpaid furloughs during the lockout have recouped their wages, according to a source. The move was expected.
