Colts offensive guru to consult with Jets
Former Colts offensive coordinator Tom Moore's latest retirement did not last long. He said he's been hired as an offensive consultant for the Jets.
Moore, 72, confirmed Thursday that he will help Rex Ryan and coordinator Brian Schottenheimer in a consulting role this season. The Jets are Moore's sixth team in what will be his 35th season in the NFL.
"I want to stay involved,'' Moore told Newsday by phone. "This is an ideal situation. I couldn't be happier.''
A league source confirmed the hiring, saying Moore will work mainly from his South Carolina home. He'll review videotape there and occasionally will visit the Jets' facility in New Jersey.
Moore spent the last 13 seasons in Indianapolis, working closely with quarterback Peyton Manning and running the offense. Moore retired briefly in 2009 and again in 2010 before returning as a senior offensive assistant. He retired again in May.
Moore said his decision to join the Jets had nothing to do with the way things ended in Indianapolis.
"No, not at all,'' he said. "I had a great run there, truly enjoyed it. They are tremendous people. I wish them nothing but the best. They were great to me. But I'm excited with the change.''
Moore coached the New York Stars of the short-lived World Football League in 1974, then was an assistant at the University of Minnesota for two seasons. In 1977 he became receivers coach for the Steelers, with whom he won two Super Bowls.
Now Moore has decided he's still not ready to step away from the NFL. He even said he believes he can learn from the Jets' coaches.
"It's a two-way street,'' Moore said. "You're always learning in this business and they're great coaches. I'm looking forward to it.''
