Martin: Do you try to stay out of the public eye?
Revis: "I'm not Derek Jeter [laughs] or Mark Sanchez. People come up every now and then, but it's nothing crazy. And I'm not an ignorant dude, so I don't mind it."
So you get recognized a lot?
Revis: "Sometimes you'd be amazed at how much people pay attention. We were at a Miami Heat-Lakers game and at halftime we go to this VIP sitting room and Albert Pujols walks in and he's like, 'Revis Island?!' I'm looking like, I can't believe this came out his mouth. He was like, 'Meet my kids, my kids are fans.' He was so cool and humble."
Have you met Jeter?
Revis: "Yeah, but it was quick. Like how he do ya'll [reporters], that's how he did me [laughs]. It was brief . . . I was like, 'Dang, what's up? I thought we were doing the New York thing.' But I guess not [laughs]. He was probably thinking, 'This is MY city!' Psych, nah, I'm just playing [laughs]."
How's your music coming along? (Revis writes and records his own music, a collection of R&B, pop and rap, in his home studio)
Revis: "I started doing that last year. It kind of keeps me relaxed. When you feel it, you've got to let it out. Some songwriters can just have a notebook and write, write, write. I can't do it like that. I gotta listen to a beat and come up with concepts that way."
So what's the goal with music? You're on form of therapy? An album?
Revis: "I don't really know. I've always been into music. I grew up a drummer, so I've always been around music. This is not me trying to get money . . . I [stunk] when I first started [laughs]. I kept on getting better. I started hanging around [Pittsburgh rappers] Wiz [Khalifa] and Mac Miller in the studio. You've got to respect those guys for what they do 'cause they really do work hard. And music, it ain't no joke. It's tough."
If memory serves correctly, you can renegotiate your contract in a couple years, correct?
Revis [laughs]: "That's word on what street? Is that Reporter Avenue? Who told you that?"
Is it true?
Revis [smiles]: "I have to double-check. It's so much language in the contract. You know how many papers I got to sign? They be like this [holding his hand roughly 12 inches above the table]. I don't know. I just got to double-check. It's a phone call away."
Do your kids (daughter Deyani, 5, and son Jayden, 3) get to see you play?
Revis: "Yeah, but my daughter's not really into it. You can tell when she gets older, she's going to be in her own lane. She's going to be into other things. She don't care about that stuff. My son's the one that knows about football, basketball, soccer, baseball, Michael Jordan. I taught him that last year."
