Edwards' playing time could have big effect on game

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. - How much of Sunday's game against the Dolphins will wide receiver Braylon Edwards miss? It could be anywhere from a down to a whole game - coach Rex Ryan won't reveal that - but the Jets surely will have a plan laid out before Saturday's walk-through.
Whether it's Brad Smith or David Clowney filling Edwards' spot, the Jets' passing attack that dissected the Patriots' secondary will look different for at least part of Sunday's game in Florida.
"We don't really know," Dustin Keller said after the Jets' final practice of the week. "If Braylon's not out there, we might not get the double-teams he usually draws. It'll be a little bit different."
It will be a little different with Edwards roaming the sideline, waiting to be released into the game. Edwards won't start, and Ryan said there are "factors" determining how much of the game he will miss as punishment for his DWI arrest early Tuesday morning, but the coach declined to elaborate. "We're just going to go out and play," Ryan said.
Edwards was a factor in Sunday's win over the Patriots, contributing five catches for 45 yards and a touchdown. But his biggest factor was drawing coverage away from Keller, who had seven catches for 115 yards and a score.
"We have a lot of weapons still," said Jerricho Cotchery, who also had a touchdown catch Sunday and likely will be the Dolphins' main defensive target on the outside. "We can still create a lot of problems. We're happy we can create a lot of problems."
The Dolphins have allowed only 10 points in each of the first two games, and Miami cornerback Jason Allen picked off the Vikings' Brett Favre twice Sunday. Not having Edwards for any length of time could put the Jets at a disadvantage against a defense that's been clicking.
"They've been putting a lot of hats on the ball," Nick Mangold said of the Dolphins' defense. "They've been good at showing a lot of different fronts, too. They're just a tough group."
Notes & quotes: Mangold, who has a sprained AC joint in his right (snapping) shoulder, was limited Friday but did do some on-field work for the first time all week and declared he'll play Sunday. "I'd basically have to be dead to not play," he said. "Or have my arm amputated." Jason Taylor (elbow) also was limited in his first work of the week. Ryan said Taylor will play as well . . . OL Wayne Hunter (shin) was ruled out for Sunday, meaning rookie OL Vlad Ducasse will make his debut as the blocking tight end and extra OT . . . Darrelle Revis (hamstring) and Calvin Pace (foot) also will not make the trip to Florida . . . The Dolphins claimed OL Pat Brown off waivers from the Jets in a bit of gamesmanship . . . S Eric Smith was fined $7,500 for his hit on Wes Welker in Sunday's win over the Patriots.
