CORTLAND -- A source confirmed safety Eric Smith suffered an MCL sprain during Friday night's preseason loss to Cincinnati.

His status officially remains day-to-day, but Smith reportedly will miss the rest of the preseason.

A team spokesperson said after the game that X-rays on the veteran safety's knee and hip were negative and Smith would be day-to-day. Results of an MRI were pending as of Friday night, but the Daily News was first to report Smith's MCL injury on Saturday. There's a chance he could be back for the Jets' regular season opener against the Bills Sept 9.

Yeremiah Bell and LaRon Landry currently are the Jets starting safeties, but the injury to Smith presents a big opportunity for rookies Josh Bush and Antonio Allen.
