Ex-Bills RB Karlos Williams visits Jets camp
Former Bills running back Karlos Williams visited the Jets on Tuesday, a source confirmed to Newsday, but it appears nothing is imminent.
Though Todd Bowles and the coaching staff have had to contend with plenty of camp injuries at the position, Williams’ trip to Florham Park, New Jersey, was merely a matter of due diligence.
He was released on Saturday by Bill coach Rex Ryan and cleared waivers on Monday.
The 23-year-old free agent was suspended for the first four games of the 2016 season for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy. Complicating matters was Williams showing up to training camp 20 pounds overweight. The Bills placed him on the active/non-football injury list at the start of camp.
Asked on Aug. 2 if Williams’ roster spot was safe, Ryan told reporters: “We’re not going to give up on Karlos Williams. I can tell you that.”
Two and a half weeks later, Buffalo released the 2015 fifth-round pick. During his brief stint with the Bills, Williams rushed for 517 yards and seven touchdowns on 93 carries.
As for the Jets’ running back woes, Matt Forte (hamstring) is still easing his way back into the offense, while Khiry Robinson (leg) participated in team drills for the first time on Monday. Running backs Romar Morris (shoulder) and Dominique Williams (concussion) also have missed time because of injury Bernard Pierce (hamstring) recently was released from injured reserve.
