Todd Bowles bothered that Geno Smith played catch two days after surgery

Geno Smith and his broken jaw apparently are feeling great. But for the time being, his coach would prefer to see the quarterback take a seat.

Todd Bowles wasn't happy to see pictures of Smith throwing a football Saturday, only a day after he was released from the hospital. "He shouldn't be doing it right now,'' Bowles said Sunday, adding that the Jets' trainers said Smith "couldn't do anything physical. We handled that internally. We had that discussion.''

The New York Post spotted Smith playing catch with a friend in the parking lot of his apartment complex in Whippany, New Jersey, two days after surgery to repair his broken jaw. Smith, who was photographed shirtless and wearing black bandages on his face that resembled eye black, told the Post: "I feel great. You see me throwing, right?''

According to the newspaper, his speech was "slightly slurred'' because of the swelling.

Former teammate Ikemefuna Enemkpali hit Smith in the locker room Tuesday after an argument about Smith still owing him $600. Rather than wiring Smith's jaw shut, doctors inserted plates and screws. He is expected to miss six to 10 weeks.

Smith met with Jets doctors Sunday, but the team said he won't be back at the facility on a full-time basis yet. Bowles said he didn't get the chance to talk to him because the quarterback arrived during practice.

Bowles conceded the risk factors involved in performing physical activity unsupervised.

"Yeah, he just got surgery. You don't want him to get infected,'' he said, although he later downplayed the incident. "As an organization, we handled that, talked to him. And it was fine. It wasn't that big of a deal. It's not disappointing, it's something you don't want [him] to do. And we addressed it.''

He said Smith won't face any discipline.
