FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — There is no “competition” between Geno Smith and Bryce Petty. At least, not yet.

On the heels of the Jets’ 17-13 win over the Jaguars in Thursday night’s preseason opener, coach Todd Bowles made it clear that Smith isn’t yet in danger of being supplanted by Petty for the backup quarterback job.

“Oh, Geno’s No. 2 right now,” Bowles said, matter-of-factly. “We’re not making no competition after one preseason game.”

The depth chart remains just as it was when starting quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick returned for training camp late last month: Smith remains the No. 2, followed by Petty and rookie Christian Hackenberg.

Petty’s pocket poise and overall performance against Jacksonville (7-for-14 for 93 yards) opened some eyes after he spent all of 2015 on the bench. But Bowles said he doesn’t plan to change how he divvies up reps between Smith and Petty heading into Friday night’s preseason game against the Redskins.

“Going forward, we’ll sit down and discuss it,” Bowles said. “Obviously, we expect the [first-teamers] to play a little bit longer than they played the last game. Depending on what we need to do, we’ll adjust it going forward.

“Practice [reps] won’t change much,” he added. “I’ve been looking at Bryce for a while now.”

Smith, who blew off beat reporters after Thursday’s preseason game, again declined to speak to the media after Saturday’s practice. He had a decent showing against the Jaguars, completing 8 of 14 passes for 79 yards and a touchdown.

“He did OK,” Bowles said of Smith. “Like I said, him and Bryce played OK. Fitz played OK. The biggest thing, they didn’t turn it over. We didn’t have any pre-snap penalties and we’ve had those all week in practice since camp began. And we didn’t turn it over and they gave us a chance, so I thought they commanded the game well.

“I don’t think anybody saw any extravagant defenses or blitzes, or anything like that. They were playing basic coverages like us, so going forward you’ve got to see a little more because you know what kind of pressure’s coming, you know what kind of defenses they’re going to face. And as they go forward with playing time and getting more comfortable, we’ll see.”
