FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Shonn Greene has been ruled out of Sunday's game against Cincinnati with a low grade skin infection, the team announced Thursday.
Greene, the Jets' starting running back, participated in the morning walkthrough but was a no-show during practice.
The team could not confirm or rule out staph infection because skin infections cannot be cultured, but a team spokesman said the infection is not an open wound. The infection was caught early and is being treated with antibiotics, the team said.
Greene has been hobbled by injuries during his brief career. In addition to nursing an ankle injury in 2009, he was forced out of the 30-17 AFC title loss to the Colts in 2010 because of a rib injury.
Rex talks to tix holders
Rex Ryan fielded questions from season ticket holders on a conference call. Asked about the team's depth -- or lack thereof -- on the offensive line and its willingness to sign veteran free agents as backups, Ryan said: "We'll definitely give the guys on this roster a chance for those spots . . . Hopefully a couple guys will step up."
Extra points
WR Plaxico Burress wasn't hobbled in practice by his left ankle . . . C Nick Mangold (stinger), G Brandon Moore (hip) and QB Mark Brunell (finger) participated in drills. Though he believes Moore would be able to play, Ryan said he won't let him. "Coach's decision," he said . . . NT Sione Pouha (knee), LB Bart Scott (leg), and DT Marcus Dixon (knee) were held out. RB Joe McKnight (concussion), was scheduled to see a doctor and did not participate in drills . . . OL Rob Turner (leg) was scheduled to have surgery in North Carolina, Ryan said.
