Hard Knocks: Jets praise Mangold; send message to Revis?

It took five minutes last night for the first reference to Darrelle Revis to be made on the latest edition of HBO's "Hard Knocks" series.

Less than two minutes after that HBO showed cuts of Jets coaches and players lauding center Nick Mangold for his new deal.

Was it a veiled attempt to send a message to Revis and his agent?

"Nick's really valuable to Mark [Sanchez]," Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum said.

Tannenbaum wasn't the only one praising Mangold.

"He's one of those guys who's always on an even keel," offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer said.

It didn't stop there. Sanchez was very complimentary of one of his chief protectors, saying he "deserves every bit" of his contract.

The Revis holdout situation took six minutes of the show as Jets executives talked extensively about Dallas Morning News columnist Tim Cowlishaw's assertion last week that a deal was imminent.

"If [Cowlishaw] is right, we'll be the last to know," Tannenbaum said.

The Jets coaching staff continued to praise fullback John Conner, also referred to as the "Terminator" because of his bone-jarring blocks.

Conner's emergence could mean the end of days for Tony Richardson or Jason Davis at some point. The failings of rookie guard Vladimir Ducasse were also highlighted.

Another interesting tidbit from last night was the friendly relationship between Sanchez and Schottenheimer. The clip of Sanchez painting a mustache on the picture of Schottenheimer's son isn't something seen every day.

The biggest laugh of the episode might have come midway through the show when Hofstra security personnel, led by associate director for athletic facilities Jay Artinian, helped tackle a bold fan who streaked on the field during Jets practice last week.

The profanity was held to a minimum early on. But things picked up midway through the show. The "F" word was used a total of 20 times, not including the times it was uttered by players on the field of play.

No episode of "Hard Knocks" would be complete without the emotional cut segment. Kellen Clemens, fighting for the No. 2 quarterback spot, agreed to have his salary restructured rather than get cut.
