The Jets have traded another defensive starter from their vaunted 2022 draft class.
Edge rusher Jermaine Johnson has been dealt to the Tennessee Titans for defensive tackle T’Vondre Sweat, according to a league source. The trade can’t be made official until the new league year begins next month.
Johnson will reunite with former Jets coach Robert Saleh, who is in his first season as the Titans head coach.
This move almost assures the Jets will draft an edge rusher with the No. 2 overall pick. Ohio State’s outside linebacker/edge Arvell Reese is the player most often linked to the Jets at that spot. Texas Tech’s David Bailey and Miami’s Rueben Bain Jr. also are expected to be in consideration at No. 2.
Sweat, 24, is a promising young player who the Titans drafted in the second round in 2024 out of Texas. He’s appeared in 29 NFL games and totaled 85 tackles and three sacks.
Johnson was one of three players the Jets drafted in the first round in 2022, along with Sauce Gardner and Garrett Wilson. Only Wilson remains now. The Jets traded Gardner during last season to the Indianapolis Colts for two first-round picks.
The versatile Johnson played in 47 games for the Jets. He recorded 131 tackles and 13 sacks. A torn Achilles limited him to just two games in 2024. He returned last year and had 43 tackles and three sacks in 14 games.
