Jets agree with Smith, add old friend Strickland

After getting spurned in their pursuit of Nnandi Asomugha, the Jets have moved swiftly to begin shoring up their secondary.

They started by coming to terms on a new deal with defensive back Eric Smith on a three-year, according to a source. They also, according to a source, added depth by agreeing to a one-year deal with cornerback Donald Strickland.

At this point, Smith figures to be starting at safety opposite Jim Leonhard, who's recovering nicely from the broken leg suffered in December. That was Brodney Pool's job last year, but the word is he may not be back.

Strickland served mostly as the Jets nickel back in Rex Ryan's first season, but had nagging injuries at times that kept him off the field. He played last season in San Diego and was waived by the Chargers on Thursday.
