Grading the Jets in NFL Week 10 vs. Buffalo Bills

OFFENSE

The Jets played the top defensive team and they looked overmatched. Extremely overmatched. Mike White’s star dimmed against Buffalo. He struggled to move the offense for much of the game. He threw four interceptions and no touchdown passes. One came on the second series after his arm was hit as he was throwing. The other three were in the third quarter. They were bad throws by White. Overall, the Jets turned it over five times. You’re never going to win games or even stay in them when you give the ball away that often. The Jets didn’t get into the end zone until the fourth quarter, when the game was long over. It was 38-3 when Michael Carter ran it in from 1-yard out.

GRADE: F

DEFENSE

The Bills’ offense came in angry after not scoring a touchdown last week against the Jaguars. The Jets’ defense came in embarrassed after allowing 45 in Indianapolis. The Jets were embarrassed again. They gave up 45 points again. They showed very little resistance again. They showed very little pride again. The Bills finished with a season-high 489 yards of offense. They scored a touchdown on their first drive and got in the end zone on four of five drives between the second and third quarters. The one that the Bills didn’t was at the end of the half when Josh Allen took a knee. The Bills scored four rushing touchdowns. This defense is a mess and needs a major change.

GRADE: F

SPECIAL TEAMS

Things started badly for Brant Boyer’s group. Tevin Coleman had a nice 33-yard return to start the game, but Braxton Berrios was flagged for holding. The Jets started their first series at their own 10. The Jets never gave White good field position. Their first nine series started at the Jets’ 25 or worse. They totaled 41 yards on five returns. Matt Ammendola made his only field goal (48 yards) and two extra-point tries.

GRADE: D

COACHING

Something has to change on defense. Robert Saleh said last week he wouldn’t get more involved this week. Maybe he needs to do more because defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich’s group has been dreadful. The decision to not put their best corner on Stefon Diggs cost them. The decision to play a lot of one-on-one against this talented receiving corps cost them. The Jets had extra time to work on fixing the defense. They hadn’t played since Nov. 4. Those additional days to come up with something on both sides of the ball against a hungry, motivated team were not well spent.
