FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — A frustrated Denzel Mims wants a chance to prove himself to the coaches by practicing with the Jets’ starting offense, but the third-year receiver doesn’t think he will get it.

“I feel like they have made their mind up,” Mims said. “I feel like I can change their mind on that. I feel like I have been doing that. Their minds are pretty made up though.”

Mims requested a trade last week, hoping to go to a team where he would get a chance to start. The Jets kept him on their 53-man roster where he is behind receivers Corey Davis, Elijah Moore, Garrett Wilson and Braxton Berrios. Mims is “frustrated” and predicted that he would be “inactive” when the Jets play Baltimore in Week 1.

“Probably inactive,” Mims said. “I’m going to try to be active, try to crack my way up in there.”

General manager Joe Douglas said he “fielded some calls” and “ultimately nothing materialized, especially anything that we would consider the right value of a player of Denzel’s talent and ability.”

Douglas could still move Mims if he’s presented with an offer he likes. In the meantime, Mims said he would continue to be professional, work hard and try to earn a chance to play more.

“That’s tough not being able to be with ones, be able to show it,” Mims said. I’m going to continue to try to do that at practice, continue to show them I can play, I can be with the ones and I feel like I deserve to be with the ones.”

Becton has surgery

Right tackle Mekhi Becton underwent season-ending surgery last week to repair his fractured kneecap. Douglas said the doctors feel good about Becton’s “long-term ability to play football.” Becton appeared in just one game last year. He had knee surgery in September 2021 and never returned.

Good depth

The Jets didn’t make any waiver claims Wednesday. Seven players who they released on Tuesday were claimed — by far the most of any team and an indication that the Jets have a talented and deep roster. The Bills were next with four. The former Jets who were claimed were safety Jason Pinnock (Giants), offensive tackle Chuma Edoga (Falcons), tight end Trevon Wesco (Bears), cornerbacks Javelin Guidry (Cardinals), Isiah Dunn (Seahawks), Rachad Wildgoose (Commanders) and linebacker Del’Shawn Phillips (Ravens).

Practice team

The Jets brought back 13 players for their practice squad. On offense: quarterback Chris Streveler receivers Tarik Black, Calvin Jackson and Irv Charles, tight end Kenny Yeboah, and tackles Chris Glaser and Grant Hermanns. The defense is linemen Bradlee Anae, Jonathan Marshall and Tanzel Smart, linebackers Hamsah Nasirildeen and DQ Thomas and safety Will Parks.

The Jets still have three open spots.

Two-minute drill

Defensive end Vinny Curry is a candidate for short-term IR to start the season and would miss four games.
