OFFENSE

Joe Flacco played well enough to win. But overall there were too many mistakes by the offense. He threw for 291 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. But the offense had too many breakdowns. Flacco’s lone turnover – a fumble – came when he was drilled from the back when someone missed a block. The Jets were at the 5-yard line on that drive and came up empty. Flacco was flagged for a costly intentional grounding penalty that kept the Jets from getting points. He said there was a miscommunication with the receiver. The Jets were at the 11 at the time. They had to settle for a Matt Ammendola field-goal attempt that he missed. Rookie receiver Elijah Moore had a great game – eight catches, 141 yards and a 62-yard touchdown.

DEFENSE

This group had given up 175 points in the previous four games, so allowing 24 was an improvement. But you can’t get too excited because the Dolphins are one of the worst offenses in the league. Yet they scored more than two touchdowns for the just the second time all season and rushed for more than 100 yards for only the second time in eight games. The Jets had a breakdown that led to a 65-yard touchdown catch-and-run by Mack Hollins. A roughing-the-passer penalty on John Franklin-Myers on third down near the goal line and a defensive holding on third down by Jason Pinnock late in the game were killer penalties that extended drives and led to 10 points.

SPECIAL TEAMS

It was a rough day for Brant Boyer’s group. Ammendola clanked a 55-yard field goal off of the left sidebar and missed a 40-yard try wide left. Punter Braden Mann only averaged 38 yards per punt but three landed inside the 20. Tevin Coleman and Braxton Berrios had a couple of decent returns.

COACHING

They made costly mistakes as well. The Jets called two timeouts in the third quarter on offense because they didn’t have the right personnel in the game for what they were running. They also had a delay of game when Ammendola was lining up for a 56-yard field goal. Robert Saleh said he changed his mind at the last second and didn’t want to kick the field goal. This was a team-wide loss.
