Mr. Irrelevant, meet Mr. Rodgers.

The NFL awarded the Jets three compensatory picks on Friday: one sixth (218) and two seven-rounders (256, 257). The Jets now have eight picks overall in the 2024 NFL Draft: Nos. 10, 72, 112, 114, 187, 218, 256 and 257 – the final selection.

The last pick in the draft is known as Mr. Irrelevant. The 49ers used that pick two years ago on quarterback Brock Purdy, who became their starter and led them to the Super Bowl last season.

The Jets need a backup to Aaron Rodgers, but they’ll try to sign a proven veteran in free agency, which begins next week. Drafting a young quarterback to learn from Rodgers is a possibility for the Jets, who will now have more chances.

Teams are given compensatory picks when they lose more than they gain in free agency the prior season.
