Jets expected to re-sign Richardson on Tuesday
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. - Tony Richardson's locker still had plenty of items left in it yesterday, and he should be able to rearrange them to his liking sometime this morning.
The veteran fullback was released Sunday when the Jets added three players they claimed off waivers, but they are expected to re-sign the respected locker-room leader Tuesday. He's scheduled to practice and will play in Monday's season opener against the Ravens at New Meadowlands Stadium.
Rex Ryan, who openly talked last week about keeping two fullbacks on the roster, had a hand in bringing the 16-year pro back.
"Yeah, I just said, 'Let's get him in, quick,' " Ryan said. "The thing is, we felt pretty confident we could get T-Rich back, but there's still the possibility that somebody gets him and convinces him . We had to get this deal done quick, so that's what we did."
But was he originally on board with the move to cut T-Rich loose? "I felt confident that we could get Tony back at some point," Ryan said. "That point is 24 hours later."
With Darrelle Revis reporting yesterday, the Jets can request a two-game roster exemption to slide Richardson on the roster. They could do so without having to make a corresponding roster move.
However, if they want to activate Revis from the reserve/did not report list - which they'll surely do - it has to be done within the context of the 53-man roster. So that means they'd have to cut a player before they can activate Revis, allowing him to play in a game.
Extra points
The Jets announced they've signed six players to the practice squad: C Rob Felix, LB Rickey Foley, LB Josh Mauga, WR Larry Taylor, S Don Warren and NT Martin Tevaseu. They have two more spots to fill on the eight-man squad.
