Jets, Garrard will 'continue to talk' about deal

The Jets could be close to signing free-agent quarterback David Garrard.
The former Jaguars quarterback, who last played in 2010, worked out for the Jets on Thursday. The news of an impending deal isn't surprising, considering Garrard had a good workout and results from his physical came in late Thursday.
A source familiar with the situation told Newsday Friday morning that Garrard and the Jets will "continue to talk." Though Garrard has garnered interest from other NFL teams, the Jets at the moment appear to be at the top of his list, provided their salary cap issues are squared away.
ESPN's Adam Schefter first reported the news, tweeting Friday: "Garrard 'anticipates putting a deal together' with Jets once they can work through cap issues, per source. 'Both sides are feeling good about a possible deal,' said source."
Should a deal be completed, Garrard would compete in training camp with Mark Sanchez, Greg McElroy and Matt Simms. The Jets also have been mentioned as a potential landing spot for Chiefs QB Brady Quinn.
Garrard took the 2011 season off in order to recover from surgery on a herniated disk and signed as a backup quarterback with the Dolphins last offseason. He was forced to undergo arthroscopic surgery on his left knee in August 2012 and subsequently was cut by the team less than a month later.
During his nine years in Jacksonville, Garrard – an East Orange, N.J. native -- threw for 16,003 yards, 89 touchdowns and 54 interceptions. After the Jags drafted Blaine Gabbert in 2011, Garrard was released five months later.
