9. PHIL SIMMS, Quarterback, 1979-93
A controversial first-round pick out of Morehead State in 1979, Simms used a mix of arm strength and toughness to carve out his place in Giants history. He may not have Hall of Fame stats, but he helped solidify the QB position at a time when the Giants emerged as champions. His epic 22-of-25 performance in Super Bowl XXI earned him the game's MVP honors. Simms finished with 33,462 passing yards and 199 TDs, and was inducted into the Giants' Ring of Honor in August 2010. ? Credit: Newsday / David L. Pokress

Mike Tannenbaum joked (rather awkwardly, I might add) during the draft process about potentially going out and getting another quarterback. Even with starter Mark Sanchez, Tim Tebow and third-stringer Greg McElroy, the Jets GM insisted you can never had enough quality pieces -- even at the quarterback position.

Well, the Jets reportedly have extended a tryout invitation to Matt Simms -- son of Giants icon and Super Bowl XXI MVP Phil Simms -- to attend their rookie mini-camp this weekend.

Simms, a Tennessee product (via Louisville and El Camino College), lost his starting job for the Vols in 2010 and started briefly in 2011. He attended both the Jets and Giants' pre-draft local workouts.

The Jets already have signed Tulsa QB G.J. Kinne to a undrafted free agent deal and have also extended a tryout invitation to Albany QB Dan DiLella as well, according to his agent.
