FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — Justin Fields’ season is officially over and perhaps his Jets’ career.

Aaron Glenn announced that the Jets are placing Fields on injured reserve because of a knee issue that has hampered him lately. Glenn chuckled when he was asked if Fields would be with the Jets next season.

“We'll see how that goes,” Glenn said Tuesday. “We’re focused on New England right now.”

The Jets signed Fields to a two-year, $40 million contract in March with $30 million guaranteed. He’s on the books for $10 million guaranteed next season. If the Jets release Fields with a pre-June 1 distinction, they will take on $22 million in dead money in 2026. If they cut him post-June 1, it would be $13 million hit next year and $9 million in 2027.

Fields struggled leading the Jets’ offense. He threw for 1,259 yards, seven touchdowns and one interception in nine starts. Fields had five games in which he passed for less than 55 yards.

He was benched following the Jets’ Week 11 loss to New England and replaced by Tyrod Taylor. Undrafted rookie Brady Cook is the Jets starting quarterback now.

“Any player that doesn't have a season that we would like for them to have, that's always disappointing,” Glenn said. “I don't want to just focus on Justin with this. … Any player that we have high hopes for and the season don't go the way we want it to go, we’re always disappointed [by] that.”

Fields has been inactive the last three games because of the knee issue. He said last week that he had “a nick or a bruise” and that his injury is “more of a week-to-week thing.”

Glenn isn’t sure if it will require surgery.

“We tried to see how we could get this thing to work, but it wasn’t getting as better as we would like it,” Glenn said. “We want to make sure we get a focus on that and make sure we get him better.

“If he [needs surgery] this will be a great time to get it done so we can get it knocked out and get himself healthy,” Glenn said. “But I don't want to place that on him. I just know this, man, we want to make sure he get this thing healthy.”
