The Jets made it official Saturday, announcing the signing of rugby player Hayden Smith.
Smith, who played rugby for the England-based Saracens club team, projects as a tight end even though he's never played a single down of American football in his life. The Jets are intrigued by the potential of Smith, who measures out at 6-6, 265 pounds and reportedly runs a 4.7-second 40-yard dash. He turns 27 Tuesday.
Smith played basketball at Division II Metropolitan State in Denver and fell in love with rugby, first suiting up for the U.S. national team before climbing up the international professional ranks.
